While I tend to lean more towards movies of a more, well, violent nature, I need a break every once in a while. When I rented "Waitress," I was expecting just another girly girl, tear jerking, so-cute-you-want-to-vomit, chick flick. Instead, I found a witty, sensitive comedy; filled with loveable characters and a life-like story-and it did make me cry…a little.
With a post-rock sound, instrumental guitar interplay and name that sounds ominous in a vague and ambiguous way, you would think This Will Destroy You, the band behind the debut album of the same name would think twice about their identity. It's hard to go more than a few moments without having Explosions in the Sky splash across your mind when listening to This Will Destroy You, and in truth, they emulate their predecessors quite well.
In the world of indie music, the anchoring feel of a guitar with well-placed slides, hammer-ons and careful finger work remains rather standard. Although this familiar sound reigns supreme due to its effectiveness in conveying the more intimate sounds of folk artists like Joze Gonzalez and psych-folk artist Devendra Banhart, Owen Pallett (aka Final Fantasy) has opted for a less familiar stringed instrument - the violin.
