Junior class lacks ICC representation

Though the freshman, sophomore and senior classes are fully represented in the Inter-Class Council, the junior class has only one representative: Micaela Guajardo '10, president of her class. The ICC consists of the Class Councils from each grade and is chaired by Raymond Sultan '09, president of his class.

Faculty recommends closure of UWW

Skidmore College faculty voted at a meeting Feb. 27, to recommend the closure of the school's distance-learning program, University Without Walls. The motion passed 100-20. Despite what the margin of the vote might imply, the discussion on the issue was impassioned.

Sports go green at game-time

Sporting events are commonly marked with enthusiasm, cheering and spirit. This past weekend's Big Green Scream introduced a new element to sporting arena: environmental awareness. Sustainable Skidmore worked with the Athletic Department, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and the Environmental Action Club to add an eco-friendly element to this past weekend's festivities.

Senate approves committee appointments

During this semester's fifth Senate meeting on Feb. 24, appointments for Campus Security Advisory Committee, Budget and Finance Committee, Athletic Council, and Speaker's Bureau were made. An overwhelming majority of senators approved the appointments Eric Bosen '10 was appointed as an additional member of the Campus Security Advisory Committee.

Celebrated feminist critic premiers work

Feminist criticism had been so 1970s. But, with the coming publication of "A Jury of Her Peers: American Women Writers from Anne Bradstreet to Annie Proulx" by literary and cultural critic Elaine Showalter, that is no longer the case. In her newest project, Showalter, who now celebrates iconic status, has hurled herself into the business of sharing that recognition and respect with her fellow female writers.

Skidmore competes in recycling contest

For the fist year, Skidmore is participating in Recyclemania, a nationwide recycling competition among institutions of higher education. Eric Fuller, the recently hired sustainability coordinator, motivated this first year of Skidmore's involvement. To track schools' recycling efforts, the competition weighs waste hauling over the course of six weeks.

Editorial: Integrate the sciences

Science is everywhere in our lives. From cell phones to vending machines, cars to plastic bags, science's role is undeniable. It is curious then that so many of us complain about having to fulfill a science requirement. Science is an important component of knowing how stuff works and possessing a better understanding of ourselves.

Equal rights are for everyone

The other day, a friend asked me what causes were most important to me when considering charitable donations. My response was perhaps typical for Skidmore - sustainability and equal rights. What I didn't expect was her follow-up question "For whom? For women?" Perhaps I'm being simplistic, but when I say equal rights, I mean equal rights for everyone regardless of gender, race, class, sexual preference and a host of other differentiators.

Increased technology leads to an age of creativity

There is a lot of talk about how future historians will define the 21st century. Many wonder if this is a time in which diversity and tolerance, as defined by the recent presidential election, will begin to cascade over society. Others ask if it is the century in which the human race finally twists the knife we have placed into the belly of Mother Earth a full 360 degrees.
