Wombats Disbanded

Gabe Weintraub/Skidmore News

On Dec. 7, 2010 the Executive Board of the SGA officially de-charted the Skidmore Wombats.

The Wombats, the college's Ultimate Frisbee team, would have celebrated their 20-year anniversary this year.

The Executive Board is comprised of SGA President Alex Stark ‘11, the SGA Executive Committee, Honor Code Commissioner Aaron Shifreen ‘13, class presidents and two senators.

During the fall semester, the SGA Executive Committee received information regarding alleged misconduct by the Wombats.

In November, college administrators met with members of the team and warned them that they were under investigation.

The Executive Board held a private meeting on Dec. 5, 2010. The captains were encouraged to speak on behalf of the Wombats and the allegations made against the team.

The five Wombat captains attended the Dec. 5 meeting.  Following the meeting, the Executive Board deliberated and decided to disband the team.

According to the official statement from the SGA, "The Board deliberated and found that the club violated the Skidmore Honor Code on multiple counts — an agreement they were bound to uphold by signing the standard club renewal form. The sanction assigned for this violation was the de-chartering of the Skidmore Wombats."

Due to the confidentiality of Executive Board deliberations, it is unknown what sections of the honor code the Wombats violated.

Rumors regarding the disbandment have been focused on allegations of first-year hazing, the presence of beer kegs at Friday practices and misbehavior during a Frisbee tournament at Hampshire College.

In early November, the captains of the Hampshire Frisbee team, the Red Scare, wrote a letter to Skidmore Dean of Student Affairs Rochelle Calhoun regarding the alleged incident.

The letter, which Calhoun forwarded to the SGA Executive Committee, claimed that the presence of the Wombats on Hampshire's campus had resulted in multiple complaints from students, faculty and campus safety.

"We thought it necessary to bring to your attention the behavior of some of the Skidmore Frisbee team members while on our campus this past weekend, November 5th and 6th, in order to make you aware of how your institution is being represented," the Red Scare captains said in the letter.

The Red Scare's letter described alleged incidences of members of the Wombats unlocking bicycles and taking them for joy rides, trying to break into the Hampshire swimming pool and urinating in public.

However, the incident that the Hampshire team found most troubling, according to the letter, was the disturbance several members of the Wombats caused in the Hampshire residences.

The members of the Wombats were apparently invited to stay in an on-campus apartment, but were found in residences they were specifically told not to enter.

"Several male [Wombats] were heard in the early morning attempting to open the doors to the rooms of female residents while muttering phrases that were construed to be sexual in nature (‘There is no way I'm not going to get laid tonight' is what one of the female residents heard as someone tried to open her locked door)," the Red Scare captains said.

A report filed by a Hampshire Campus Safety officer claims that four Skidmore students, three males and one female, were found in a residence that they were not allowed to be in.

The report says the names of the four students were determined when officers asked for identification.

The students' names are listed in the report. All students listed are members of the class of 2013.

Two male Skidmore students were purportedly found in an all-female residence and were asked to leave by a female Hampshire student.

Another female student filed a report with Hampshire Campus Safety claiming that upon entering her room she found two Wombats — one male and one female.

"She further stated that it appeared that they had been sleeping in her roommate's bed ‘because the bed was unmade,'" according to the report.

The letter from the Red Scare captains also included allegations of Wombat team members having sex in the stairwell of a Hampshire apartment complex.

"In addition, they were told not to go through [a door between apartments] when they first arrived at the apartment [they were staying in]. Once inside the adjacent apartment, the students once again began checking for open doors and, upon finding some, entered the bedroom and had sex in their beds," the Red Scare captains said.

It is unclear whether the events described by the captains of the Red Scare are the same as the events in the Hampshire Campus Safety report.

The letter also describes an incident at a Frisbee tournament in Georgia last spring during which the Wombats allegedly started a prank war with the Red Scare that escalated to lit fireworks being thrown at members of the Hampshire team.

Additionally, the Red Scare claims the Wombats threw the team's furniture into a pool and broke into the house Hampshire students rented.

The Womabts allegedly vandalized and stole their property.

The former Wombat captains, commented jointly on the allegations of misconduct at Hampshire College and the disbanding of the team.

"A misunderstanding during a tournament at Hampshire College led to allegations against the Skidmore Wombats. Although we felt we behaved appropriately on their campus, the actions of some individuals were misconstrued as inappropriate when they were in fact accidental," the captains said.

The captains said the de-chartering saddened the entire Wombat community.

"We feel it is a disservice to the Skidmore community to deny an outlet for the Ultimate Frisbee sport and to deny this loving community to its current and future members."

The four students who fucked up real bad at Hampshire don't even actually play Ultimate Frisbee with the Wombats. Like, ever. It's hard to imagine that the entire team -- especially including the half of the team who didn't even go to the tournament in the first place -- deserves to get taken down along with four people who don't even play.

perspective from a hampshire red scare member (not a captain, not in any way an official representative):

no way I can convince you that everything in our letter was true if you're determined not to believe it. we considered asking people to sign sworn affidavits but that just seemed like too much work. nonetheless, i was there, and I saw these things happen. certainly it was a minority of the wombats behaving in this manner but the captains made no effort to try and stop it and they weren't interested in trying to stop it. the wombats were de-chartered because every time they left skidmore they consistently made themselves and their institution look like a horde of drunken shit-slinging apes.

the people who deserve the most blame are skidmore's captains who have NO control over their team and are willing to permit behavior up to and including attempted rape. if they had at any point in the last few years made the obvious decision to cut the bad apples from their team instead of enabling their destructive behavior, this would not have happened. when your team comes back in a year y'all would do well to put people in charge who aren't ineffectual morons. best of luck to you.

"It's too bad that neither the SGA nor Skidnews had the consideration to do so before disbanding and/or slandering the campus's most enjoyable and unique community."

It's clear here that Skidnews in fact did interview the Wombats. If the team's captains didn't want to actually explain their behavior -- because God knows, I'm sure the newspaper would have liked to actually get into what happened rather than trying to make a bland SGA statement and some reports sound interesting -- the only conclusion I can come to is that the captains didn't actually have any explanations that would have stood up to public perusal.

If the captains and club-members knew that one or two individuals had done this stuff, they should have kicked those people out of the club right away, regardless of whether SGA was looking over their shoulder. They felt they couldn't, shouldn't, or didn't have to, and that is exactly why the club needed to be disbanded.

"A misunderstanding during a tournament at Hampshire College led to allegations against the Skidmore Wombats. Although we felt we behaved appropriately on their campus, the actions of some individuals were misconstrued as inappropriate when they were in fact accidental."

This quote is the only part of the article which fairly represents the Wombats. The allegations against the team were all either fabricated (Sex on a stairwell? Rape threats?) or exaggerated. In addition, no one was ever told "not to go through [a door between apartments] when they first arrived at the apartment [they were staying in]". A few students accidentally and unknowingly went into a neighboring apartment. No harm was done to anyone, but even if this was not the case, the whole team should not have been punished for the innocent mistake of a few individuals.

Anyone who wants to get the facts can talk to the Wombats. It's too bad that neither the SGA nor Skidnews had the consideration to do so before disbanding and/or slandering the campus's most enjoyable and unique community.

Skidmore News you should be ashamed. How dare you present the Hampshire allegations as fact, quote and reference them numerous times, and only permit 2 quote of the wombat captains. Having been at this tournament I can say with certainty that a vast majority of the allegations were false. Thank you for giving the team I love an even harder time than they've already had. Its great knowing the students support the injustice that occurred in the wombats de-chartering.

SGA is a joke. "Hearing?" "Appeal?" Without going into how I know this, SGA never gave the Wombats a chance to defend themselves. The "hearing" was a formality, they were just passing on their orders from the administration, and the orders were, "kill the Wombats." So lets stop pretending this was SGA's decision, because it wasn't. SGA doesn't have a real voice in anything that actually matters. Like all student governments, it just a resume builder for a small, narcissistic cadre of arrogant nobodies.

Anyone who thinks SGA is representing the student body is deluding themselves. They're puppets for Calhoun etc. which exists purely to foster the *appearance* of a democratic student government so they can shift the blame of unpopular decisions away from themselves and on to our "fellow students."

As for the Wombats? Again, without going into how I know this, the grievances brought against the wombats were primarily the result of the unsanctioned actions of two students, whom the captains were more than willing to discipline. I think we can all agree that it's bullshit when one or two individuals give an entire organization a bad name. Oh yeah, and hazing? Didn't happen. Any Wombat knows what rookie night entails and therefore knows that there isn't any hazing. This "charge" is only on here to vilify the captains.

So in the end, a team of 40 is screwed because 2 students fucked up. Way to go, Skidmore. They've turned an opportunity to have a genuine dialog with the Wombat captains into typical SGA-led dick measuring, which, in the end, will serve only to sow bitterness amongst the student body.

Oh yeah, and Skidnews? You're in the same narcissistic, arrogant dick measuring boat as SGA, and your puppetry approaches even theirs. Everyone on campus knows you're a bad joke, and nobody gives a shit about your "opinion," so do us all a favor and shove it.

"Hampshire needs to learn to have some fun? Threatening female students with rape is a fun time? Glad I didn't go to Skidmore if that's the case. "

Nowhere in these ALLEGATIONS did I see anyone being threatened with rape... Not that I support their actions, but what proof is there that the "No way I'm not getting laid tonight" quote wasn't completely made up in the first place? When I said Hampshire needs to learn to have fun, I was really referencing the Spring Break "incident" and the public urination and bike joy rides. Maybe I'm the only who has ever studied a legal case, but allegations are very, very often exaggerated and phrased in the most demonic way possible by plaintiffs. Its called a cry for sympathy.

Regardless, no one was sexually assaulted, or hurt. Based on pretext, even if someone was raped, Skidmore wouldn't be doing anything about it... that's more of an issue than anything.

there's no way anyone could call this unbiased. the edtiors' opinions are right there in the paper. http://www.skidmorenews.com/editorial-1.1963453

but yeah, ithought it was good reporting that they were able to dig out some of this stuff like the hampshire campus safety reports, the red scare letter... not bad, skidnews

It's not an unbiased reporting of facts though. It's a detailed review of Hampshire's complaints against the team with a stock blurb from two Wombats. It's a bunch of allegations being presented as fact with no proof, context or counterargument.

this article is pretty unbiased. all that skidnews is doing is presenting fact. people shouldn't get mad at skidnews just because a few members of the Wombats acted like complete idiots. I'm saying this as a member of the team. it's really not surprising that they got disbanded. it's not as if no one saw it coming. there's really no need to point fingers at anyone but the honors council.

I enjoy that this article is just Hampshire's allegations against the Wombats with a blurb from the captains almost as an afterthought. Real balanced take on the story there.

The Wombats were a source of unique camaraderie that only comes with sports, and it gave a ton of kids who wouldn't have that opportunity otherwise, to be a part of a team. It's disappointing that Skidmore felt that the actions of a select few were good enough to erase a 20 year history, especially when every time I visited tour guides and admissions people couldn't go two sentences without mentioning the Wombats as a massive selling point to the school.

Just as frustrating is the fact that Skidmore is turning a blind eye to the sport of ultimate frisbee as a whole and isn't providing gym space to a non-Wombat affiliated frisbee club so that the plethora of students who enjoy the sport can pursue their passion in the winter.

Hampshire needs to learn to have some fun, and the Wombats need a lesson in discretion. But de-chartering a club based on the actions a few members is kinda overkill. At least its only a year and not forever.

I don't like this. I wasn't able to go out for the team this year due to an injury and now next year I won't be able to saddens me. The school made a booboo here.
